No, the interface of this web forum is quite nasty, and the quoting function is one of the reasons it just doesn't run smooth ...

... can the admin fix it up?

Guys, this isnt a bitch, just fact. One of the issues I have is that the server hosting this site doesnt have access to the latest technologies. If people want to help me pay double the hosting fees I can upgrade to the latest and greatest of everything.

As for quoting, when you quote a post it sticks 2 empty lines after it. you ened to start type after these it seems.

Fair enough Andrew. I reckon we should stop quoting unless it is really and truely necessary ... that'd be a bandaid fix to the problem at least

As I posted just before, web hosting donations welcome

We'll see how things go. When we started this forum we started small and on limited resources. I am not an IT expert so I dont really know what or how these things are really run, so its ok to make suggestions but I suppose if it cannot really be fixed with current set up then we'll just take on board what people like/dislike and then when time comes for us to be able to upgrade we shall take everything into consideration.

Perhaps, maybe that's a good idea, but don't we want to try to consolidate the information so we have a uniform source, rather than scattered bits over 4 or 5 forums?

Hey Andrew FYI.  I was quizzing the admin of the Aussie mini forum recently.  It costs him 250 bucks a year to run.  The host server's in the US, software's intuitive and the speed is good.

Cheers,
Rod.

Iggy, Writing your own forum is not so simple. This is professional forum software that is used by a large number of people. One site has just registered its 20,000th member.

I host this site on my own hosting server, using software that I have purchased. I utilise DotNetNuke (DNN) Content Management system which in itself is free but the skins, forum module, etc that are more professional cost money.

Hosting doesnt cost me much (about 190USD per year) for heaps of diskspace and through put. Its possibly over utilised but hey thats what you get for peanuts.

The only downside to this hosting provider is that they only have access to Dot Net Framework 1.1 which limits me to a version of DNN that isnt the latest and is missing a number of performance enhancements. It also means I cant use the latest version of the Forum software.

I have been with this provider for a long time as they are VERY reliable and have a very stable hosting environment. Any move to another provider would be unknown and from what I have investigated I would be up for more than double the cost and would loose other features (like diskspace).

I have investigated the problem noted in this thread and have found the cause. I have reported it back to the vendor. The only problem is that any fix will be on the latest version which we cant upgrade to yet.

I am also looking at an alternate skin.

Cheers

Andrew

The quoting issue in question

Andrew, I totally understand building a forum is a big job. I am currently actually building a forum from scratch for a friend. When it's done, we'll see how it goes, and if everything works fine, maybe (again... maybe!) you can have a look and decide if it's suitable.
